What We Do

Brain Injury Rights Group (BIRG) is committed to protecting and advancing the rights of children and adults with disabilities, enabling those we serve to exercise their own life choices and to be able to participate in community life, to their maximum potential.

Disability Rights & Advocacy

BIRG engages in a wide range of  efforts beyond Special Education Law to protect the civil rights of individuals with disabilities. Our leadership team has experience in disability discrimination and accessibility under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  We provide information and referrals,  raise awareness of legal and social issues and protect policy and legislation affecting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

We assist those families in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEP), attending IEP meetings, reviewing evaluations and related documentation, filing “due process complaints,” negotiating settlement agreements, as well as representing and litigating on behalf of families in Impartial Hearings and before federal and state administrative agencies and courts.

Social Work

Our social work team works very closely in conjunction with our legal team to advocate to improve the lives of our client community.  Our social workers give guidance and advocate for resources available to our families.

In addition to advocating for our families, reviewing school district documentation and IEPs, they help to initiate the process for Self- Direction and Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program (CDPAP) a New York State Medicaid initiative that allows consumers to choose and hire their own personal caregiver.
